God hates us. The media is intrigued by us. We're percieved as perverts and we're one of the biggest subcutures on the internet. Are we a bunch of "furverts" to be feared & ridiculed, or is there something more to this than meets the eye?

I've been a member of the UK furry community for a decade now. Looking back, there are things I'm proud of and things that are knuckle-bitingly embarrassing. These are just some of my experiences.

glasses in grassI have a confession. I am a human. Let's get this out of the way as quickly as we can and dispel a primary, nagging myth. Not all furs think they are animals. Yeah, there are some of us that do, there are others that feel their animal inside them. Furry is a lot of things to a lot of people. I thought maybe it was time I started keeping track of my experiences and what furry is, and was to me.

My own view of the furry subculture is one of being a massive dysfunctional family. There's bickering, cliques and political backstabbing. On the other side of the coin there's a group of people that will welcome just about anybody for who they are, knowing themselves how good it feels to realise you're not alone, that you're not all that different after all

Furs get a bad rap. The media portrays us as over-sexed perverts that'll take any opportunity to get it on. We've been depicted in popular TV series including ER and CSI in a less than flattering way, the tabloid press has picked up on some of our more... Esoteric... Ways and even the supposedly high-class glossy magazine Vanity Fair has run an article on some of the less savoury aspects of conventions, plushies and poinking. It's fair to say we have our detractors. From time to time I'm one of them. When I see the antics of people that are supposed to be my contemporaries and peers, I find myself asking if I want to be around this; am I getting too old for this shit, to coin a phrase. Every time I think about walking away, I find that I can't. There are just too many good people, good friends and wonderful memories to let it all slip away.

When I discovered there were people like me, furs, the community was more segmented than it is now. Fursuiters brushed shoulders with lifestylers, fanboys had their art and therianthropes (more on these later) looked down on us as some kind of childish thing to be scorned. The lines don't seem to be as defined any more, furs are furs are furs.

In a way, the sub-links in this section are my furry memoirs. I hope you find them interesting or amusing. I've had some fun times and I have some good friends... Their names have been changed to protect their sense of shame ;)
